WHO DECLARED NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH?

National Ice Cream Month was signed into public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984, with Presidential Proclamation 5219. It designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. The decrees originated in the Senate with Joint Resolution 298 (sponsored by Sen. Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky) and in the House of Representatives with Joint Resolution 543 (sponsored by Rep. Kika de la Garza of Texas). Congress then requested President Ronald Reagan to issue a proclamation in observance of these events, which he did!

"Cone-noisseurs" have celebrated National Ice Cream Month ever since.

WHY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH CELEBRATED?

National Ice Cream Month celebrates all things ice cream: the hard work of folks in the dairy industry (from farmers to manufacturers to distributors to shop owners) and the dessert itself. In the proclamation, President Reagan noted that “over eight hundred and eighty-seven million gallons of ice cream were consumed in the United States in 1983” and that the ice cream industry contributes “substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation’s dairy industry.” Those are great things to celebrate!

HOW DO I CELEBRATE NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY?

In his proclamation, President Regan wrote

“I call upon the people of the United States to observe these events

with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
